Blog: Blind Run
On Discovery, to motivate the teenagers, we show a video called the Dipsy Run which follows a blind runner competing in a 10km run over a steep hill in San Francisco. During his run he relies on his running partner to guide him and keep him safe. This video motivates me every time I watch it however you can't just watch a video to be motivated and inspired – true motivation comes from doing it yourself! So with one of my best friends guiding me and a very trendy looking blind fold made by Marilyn at NMIT, I set out to run up to the top of the Centre of NZ hill then down to the church steps in Nelson. I could not see a thing it was totally black and the first few steps we so scary, I kept thinking I was going to run into things. After I got used to not being able to see and with John being such an amazing guide I started feeling so much more confident that I ran on my own with just his voice guiding me. One amazing thing was I didn't get tired or out of breath at all, not having the perception of where I was and focusing on my hearing not my lungs made it easier. It started me thinking about the concept of focusing and that many people focus on the hard stuff, the problems and not focus on the goal. Focusing on the goal makes the journey so much more easier! So please, go grab a blind fold and a friend and put some trust in someone.
Tomorrow is a more emotional journey and one I feel honoured and humbled to be a part of, tomorrow is the Elders Council.
